tHe cALL oF tHe mALL!!

How would like to spent your weekend after a disastrous week- the week was screwed, thanks to your hard driving boss who make you want to climb up the wall or having finally finished all your assignments for grading and submitted to your teacher-you look forward to a relaxing weekend. Have you noticed, planning a weekend with family or friends is usually centered around the mall. Well, it’s not only you- it’s everybody around you. Malls have redefined shopping experience for one and all. From chirping teenagers to corporate business workers to grannies and grand dads-all have found refuge for a boring weekend in the air conditioned roof of the malls. Finding a lot of brands under one roof without bearing the scorching heat is a boon for all shoppers; and if you are one of the window shoppers-the concept of malls was made keeping you in mind.

The concept of mall hopping is fairly new. UrbanDictionary has come up with a term called ‘Malling’, which refers to ‘going to the mall with a large group of people with no intention of buying anything’. With malls sprouting up in every nook and corner, they are easily accessible and provide for a comfortable shopping experience. All malls are evidently equipped with food courts which suffice your taste buds after a tiring shopping day out. What part of gentry does a mall cater to? Well, to each its own- wife can go shopping in the women section, men can go check out latest gadgets and children can be left to play in the kids section. Everybody is happy and satisfied.

With increasing footfalls in malls across the world-the owners aren’t complaining. It is because window shopping aggravates impulse buying. When you walk into a mall, you tend to spend around Rs. 500-600  without even giving it a thought. It helps increase sales of outlets by around 30-40 percent.

Why do people choose malls over markets? The highest contributing factor is the convenience shopping the shoppers experiences. Finding all brands under one roof without having to sweat And who in their right minds would sweat it out in the markets locating shops that they really need.

I've been noticing a new phenomenon for quite some time. Whenever I'm out in the mall, whiling away my time in the food court; I do notice a family gathering of sorts-the parents of the boy and girl accompanied by the chachi-chacha, tayi, dadi-dada, bhateeja, mami-mama, kiddies too. It has become a hot spot for first meetings without going all out and welcoming the boy's side to the home. The other day I came across a similar gathering. The boy and the girl were made to sit on a separate table to talk freely, but obviously how could they, especially under the family glare!!

Whenever we are free, the first place we can think of, is the mall. Well so be it, who's complaining? :)
